On the need for Corporate Mentoring Program on aspects of management for directors and business owners
What is the difference between a mentor and consultant? A mentor visualises director/top management role as a synthesis of personal and professional roles. A consultant visualizes the same as purely a professional role. While the former operates as an umpire, the latter operates as an analyst.
What does your job involve? Mentoring people on the board. Companies are in the throes of change and are confused. They do not know how to adapt to this new situation. Even training sessions are helping them little in achieving hardcore results. That’s because we are still dealing with the same bosses. My job is aimed at indicating choices to them in strategic decision making and offering assistance in conflict resolution.
How do CEO’s in India differ from those in the West? There are no country-borne differences. Most of them exist in the same plane. They hardly get a feedback on their activities.
What is the criterion for an organization to engage the services of a Mentor?
I get in touch with an organization through reference. I offer my services only if the prima facie information suggests that director is willing to learn. He or she treads a lonely path and should have felt the need for a sounding board.
What has your experience in this field taught you?
It is the personnel that contribute to the success of an organization. Technology has little to do with it. A good leader helps the free flow of creativity in the organization and creates environment where people feel enriched to contribute.
What is the management mantra for all bosses? It’s not a mantra. It’s a survival kit. There is no business but the business of customer satisfaction.
