Mentor of MDs

Business India, June14th, 1999

V.K. Madhav Mohan calls himself a mentor.  This is a bit different from being a consultant.  While a mentor typically helps in achieving personal change as the director or top management level, a consultant essentially targets organizational change that drives profitability.  Did you get that?  Well, Mohan is the son of noted Malayalam llittérateur V. Madhavan Nair ‘Mali’ whose books have enriched entire generations of children in Kerala.  Madhav Mohan had set up the first franchise for NIIT in Cochin way back in 1987, which later on became one of NIIT’s largest franchise centers.  Madhav Mohan’s real interest was in consulting, in helping people attain their true potential. “Companies spend crores to train their managers to adapt to change.  But the real change is needed in the boardroom,” he says.  But who is going to tell the board of directors that they are the ones who need to change?  Well, it is going to be Madhav Mohan. He works with a maximum of three to five clients a year, spending an average of a year with one client.  Mohan has been advisor to Viren Shah, MP and chief of Mukand Ltd.  He has also advised Apple Computers Inc. regarding India
